Rapid population growth, habitat loss and disease are threatening Australia’s iconic native wildlife.
RSPCA is home to Australia's busiest wildlife hospital, providing care to over 27,000 sick, injured and orphaned native animals every year.
The demands on our Brisbane based Wildlife Hospital are ever increasing and have now exceeded its capacity to care by almost 400%.
Built to cater for just 5,000 wildlife patients, in its first year of operation in 2012 a total of 8,359 patients were cared for. Over a decade later, our same facility takes in more than 27,000 native animals per year for medical treatment and rehabilitation. This exponential growth has created an urgent need to build a new, expanded facility.
A better future for wildlife
In planning for the new facility and selecting a land location, it was important to consider not only the animal welfare hotspots, reducing time in travel and enabling faster, more effective triage and support, it was also important to reduce the impact to land, avoiding any clearing of healthy habitat that is often required in developments.
The Redlands IndigiScapes precinct in Capalaba offers up the perfect location. Working in with the natural landscape, the new RSPCA building design leans into the natural landscape to deliver appropriate low-stress rehabilitation environments and educational spaces without the need for land clearing.
This purpose-built facility will deliver a contemporary Wildlife Hospital that meets community expectations for wildlife treatment and rehabilitation, and responds to the increasing needs of our native species, supporting the future of wildlife for decades to come.
The RSPCA Wildlife Hospital at the Redlands will provide acute care for sick and injured wildlife with surgical theatres, ICU and recovery spaces.
For our vets and nurses, this means better facilities, better outcomes and more second chances for wildlife.
